Peter William Thomson (born 23 August 1929) is an Australian professional golfer. He is best remembered for his five wins in The Open Championship.

Thomson was born in Brunswick, Australia. His Open Championship wins came in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, and 1965. He was the only man to win the tournament for three consecutive years in the 20th century.Thomson was a prolific tournament champion around the world, winning the national championships of ten countries, including the New Zealand Open nine times. He competed on the PGA Tour in 1953 and 1954 with relatively little success (finishing 44th and 25th on the Money List), and after that was an infrequent competitor. However in 1956, playing in just eight events, he won the rich Texas International, and achieved his best finish in one of the three majors staged in the United States (fourth at the U.S. Open), to finish ninth on the Money List.In the era that Thomson won his first four Open Championships, it was true that very few of the leading professionals from the United States travelled to Britain to play in that event. At that time, the prize money in the Open was insufficient even for an American to cover expenses if he won. However, Thomson demonstrated with his win in 1965 that he could beat a field of the world's very best players, as that victory came against a field that included Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tony Lema, three of the top four American golfers from the 1964 Money List.Thomson enjoyed a successful senior career. In 1985 he won nine times on the Senior PGA Tour in the United States, and finished top of the money list. His last tournament victory came at the 1988 British PGA Seniors Championship. He was president of the Australian PGA from 1962 to 1994 and a victorious non-playing captain of the international team in the 1998 Presidents Cup.He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988.Thomson was a guest at the presentation ceremony of the 135th Open Championship, which was won by Tiger Woods. The event marked the 50th anniversary of Thomson's third Open victory.Among golf's top players, Thomson has perhaps been the most active as a golf writer, having contributed to the Melbourne Age for some 50 years, since the early 1950s. He was for many years the club professional at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club, one of the world's top courses. Thomson has designed several golf courses in Australia.

Gary Player DMS; OIG (born 1 November 1935) is a South African professional golfer. With his nine major championship victories, he is the only non-American to have won all four majors, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of golf. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. Player has won 165 tournaments on six continents over six decades.

Player was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has logged more than 25 million kilometers (15 million miles) in travel, which is more than any other athlete.[1] Nicknamed the Black Knight, Mr. Fitness, and the International Ambassador of Golf, Player is also a renowned golf course architect with more than 300 design projects on 5 continents throughout the world. He has also written several golf books.His business interests are represented by Black Knight International, which includes Gary Player Design, Player Real Estate, and Black Knight Enterprises, aspects of which include licensing, events, publishing, wine, apparel and memorabilia.The Gary Player Stud Farm has received worldwide acclaim for breeding top thoroughbredrace horses, including 1994 Epsom Derby entry Broadway Flyer. He operates The Player Foundation, which has a primary objective of promoting underprivileged education around the world.In 1983, The Player Foundation established the Blair Atholl Schools in Johannesburg, South Africa, which has educational facilities for more than 500 students from kindergarten through eighth grade. John Patrick Daly (born April 28, 1966) is an American professional golfer on the PGA Tour.Daly is known primarily for his driving distance off the tee (earning him the nickname "Long John"), his non-country club appearance and attitude, and his rough-and-tumble personal life.

Daly remains one of the most popular and intriguing figures on the PGA Tour. His two greatest on course accomplishments are his "zero to hero" victory in the 1991 PGA Championship, and his playoff victory over Costantino Rocca in the 1995 British Open.Daly's last PGA Tour victory came in San Diego in 2004, earning him a two-year playing exemption. For 2011, Daly does not have full playing privileges on the PGA Tour, and must rely on his status as a past champion, and on sponsor invitations, to gain entry to events.Daly is the only man from either Europe or the United States to win two major golf championships but not participate in the Ryder Cup.Daly's golf swing is easily recognized, as he sends the club way "past parallel" to the ground on his backswing, an unorthodox method that nevertheless generates tremendous power. Daly is a consistent challenger for the Driving Distance crown and has won that title a record-setting 11 times as of 2004, 8 of which were consecutive. His lifetime average for distance off the tee is 309.4 yards, and his single-season personal best is an average of 314.3 yards, which he attained in 2003. Single drives in excess of 350 yards are not uncommon, and Daly can reach very long par 5 holes in two strokes. Daly claimed on The Howard Stern Show to have done an 806-yard drive on the LA airport runway. He is also known for having soft hands and a deft touch in his short game around the greens.Daly has been sponsored in recent years by Loudmouth Golf, John Daly's Golf Shops, Gripmaster Golf Grips, Golf (Focus Golf Systems), Hootersrestaurants, and 84 Lumber. In May 2009 his Hooters sponsorship was dropped. Also in 2009 he signed sponsorship deals with All Sport and Big Red.

Jesper Bo Parnevik (born 7 March 1965) is aSwedish professional golfer. He spent 38 weeks in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings in 2000 and 2001. Parnevik turned professional in 1986 and scored four wins in his early years on theEuropean Tour.

Based in Florida, he joined the PGA Tour in the mid-90s, subsequently winning five events. His playing career also includes three Ryder Cup appearances - in 1997, 1999, and 2002. He has twice been a runner-up in The Open — in 1994 and 1997. His career best world ranking of seventh, which he attained on 14 May 2000, was the highest world ranking achieved by a Swedish golfer until Henrik Stenson reached the top five in February 2007. In late 2000, Parnevik underwent hip surgery after speaking with Greg Norman who had undergone similar surgery. Parnevik finished second in the Valero Texas Open in October 2007, losing to Justin Leonard in a playoff. In 2009, after a tie for 17th finish at the SAS Masters in Sweden, Parnevik underwent further hip surgery in Vail, Colorado, United States[6] which cut short his 2009 season on the PGA Tour. He also cited the hip injury as the reason for his withdrawal from the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament ("Q-School") in December 2009.In 2010, Parnevik missed cuts in his first three tournaments and had to withdraw again after a first round 68 at the Northern Trust Openbecause of an ailing back. He had emergency surgery where it was discovered that he had a broken lumbar vertebrae that might be career ending. He is seeking advice from a physiotherapist. Parnevik played the 2011 PGA Tour season on a fully exempt status for his Top 50 All-Time Earnings ranking. He was allowed to reuse this one-time exemption after being able to play only five tournaments in 2010. He will play the 2012 season on a Medical Extension.

David Duval

David Robert Duval (born November 9, 1971) is an American professional golfer and former World No. 1 who competes on the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour Many commentators believed Duval's career to be over, but he returned to golf in 2004 at the U.S. Open, where he shot 25 over par and missed the cut. Duval has struggled since his return with his best results a T-13 at the 2004 Deutsche Bank Championship and a T-16 at the 2006 U.S. Open. He made the cut in only one PGA Tour event in 2005, but did finish in the top ten at the Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Japan. While Duval at his peak was viewed as aloof and distant and was not a fan favorite, now galleries sympathize with his plight and root for him to overcome his issues and to enjoy playing golf.

Duval had a successful start to the 2006 PGA Tour season, making the cut in his first two tournaments, as well as a very respectable finish of T-16 at the U.S. Open Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club, where his second round 68 was good enough for a tie as the best round of the tournament. Despite not reaching the same heights in the remaining two majors of the year, his performances continued a general upward trend, with none of the rounds of 80+ that had become so familiar in the previous years.After a steady start to 2007 during the West Coast Swing, Duval once again disappeared from the tour. His mother died on July 17, 2007, and he later revealed that his wife was going through a difficult pregnancy. This prompted the PGA Tour to amend its medical exemption policies – and Duval was granted twenty starts for the next season.After a lackluster first half of the year, Duval inexplicably reappeared on the leaderboard of The Open Championship, rekindling memories of his major victory. He shot 73–69–83–71 for the week and finished T-39.In 2009, Duval used his final career money exemption on the PGA Tour. He made his first cut of 2009 at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February. However, he stormed back onto the golf scene with a T-2 finish at the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black. After going through sectional qualifying, Duval made the most of his first appearance in the U.S. Open since 2006. Going into the final round, Duval was four shots behind eventual winner Lucas Glover. Duval made a triple bogey at the par three 3rd hole, but rebounded with three straight birdies from 14 to 16. He stood on the tee of the 71st hole in a tie for the lead, but his par putt lipped out on the hole, and he finished tied for second, two shots behind Glover. It was his best finish on tour since the 2002 Memorial Tournament. After the Open, Duval jumped 740 spots in the Official World Golf Rankings from 882 to 142. Duval failed to earn his PGA Tour card for the 2010 season, so he had to play on sponsor's exemptions. He showed more signs of a come-back by shooting a final round 69 to finish 2nd to defending champion Dustin Johnson at the 2010 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Duval had a good 2010 season and retained his tour card at the end of the year.

Theodore Ernest "Ernie" Els (born 17 October 1969) is a South African professional golfer, who has been one of the top professional players in the world since the mid-1990s.

A former World No. 1, he is known as "The Big Easy" due to his imposing physical stature (he stands 1.91 metres [6 feet, 3 inches]) along with his fluid, seemingly effortless golf swing. Among his numerous victories are three major championships: the U.S. Open in 1994 at the Oakmont Country Club and 1997 at the Congressional Country Club, and The Open Championship in 2002 at Muirfield.[1]Other highlights in Els' career include topping the 2003 and 2004 European Tour Order of Merit (money list), and winning the World Match Play Championship a record seven times. He was the leading career money winner on the European Tour until overtaken by Lee Westwood in 2011, and was the first member of the tour to earn over 25 million Euros from European Tour events. He has held the number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings and holds the record for weeks ranked in the top ten with over 780. Els was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2010, on his first time on the ballot, and was inducted in May 2011. Els is represented by International Sports Management. Arnold Daniel Palmer (born September 10, 1929) is an American professional golfer, who is generally regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men's professional golf. He has won numerous events on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, dating back to 1955. Nicknamed "The King," he is one of golf's most popular stars and its most important trailblazer, because he was the first superstar of the sport's television age, which began in the 1950s.

He is part of "The Big Three" in golf, along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, who are widely credited with popularizing and commercialising the sport around the world.Palmer's most prolific years were 1960–1963, when he won 29 PGA Tour events in four seasons. In 1960, he won the Hickok Belt as the top professional athlete of the year and Sports Illustrated magazine's "Sportsman of the Year" award. He built up a wide fan base, often referred to as "Arnie's Army", and in 1967 he became the first man to reach one million dollars in career earnings on the PGA Tour. By the late 1960s Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player had both acquired clear ascendancy in their rivalry, but Palmer won a PGA Tour event every year from 1955 to 1971 inclusive, and in 1971 he enjoyed a revival, winning four events.Palmer won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average four times: 1961, 1962, 1964, and 1967. Jack William Nicklaus (born January 21, 1940), nicknamed "The Golden Bear", is an American professional golfer. He won 18 career major championships on the PGA Tour over a span of 25 years and is widely regarded as one of the greatest professional golfers of all time. In addition to his 18 Majors, he was runner-up a record 19 times, and placed 3rd an additional 9 times. Nicklaus did not play that many tournaments because he wanted to focus on the Majors, but is still second on the PGA-tournament winning list, with 73 victories.

After winning two U.S. Amateurs in 1959 and 1961, and challenging for the 1960 U.S. Open, Nicklaus turned professional toward the end of 1961. The 1962 U.S. Open was both Nicklaus' first major championship victory and his first professional win. This win over Arnold Palmer began the on-course rivalry between the two. In 1966, Nicklaus won the Masters Tournament for the second year in a row, becoming the first golfer to achieve this, and also won The Open Championship, completing his career slam of major championships. At age 26, he became the youngest to do so at the time. In 1968 and 1969, Nicklaus did not win a major tournament. He then won another Open Championship in 1970.Between 1971 and 1980, he would win a further nine major championships, overtake Bobby Jones' record of 13 majors, and become the first player to complete double and triple career slams of golf's four professional major championships. At the age of 46, Nicklaus claimed his 18th and final major championship at the 1986 Masters Tournament, becoming that championship's oldest winner. Nicklaus joined the Senior PGA Tour (now known as the Champions Tour) in January 1990, when he became eligible, and by April 1996 had won 10 of the tour's tournaments, including eight of that tour's major championships, despite playing a very limited schedule. Vijay Singh

Vijay Singh is 47 now, with a little more salt than pepper in his beard. In three years, he will be old enough to play on the Champions Tour, wind down his career and spend more time with his family.

Or not.

"I'm really not looking forward to even talking about the Champions Tour now," Singh said Thursday, shortly after firing a 3-under 67 in the first round of the Honda Classic, leaving him in a tie for sixth place.

"I'm not looking forward to 50. It's a long ways from now. I'm 47 and I feel healthy."

It had been a while since Singh could say that.

The surgery he had in January 2009 didn't fully repair torn cartilage in his right knee. The knee was such a problem throughout the '09 season that he couldn't even bend down to read a putt. He also developed a back injury because he was trying to compensate for his knee.

The result was his worst professional season since his rookie year of 1992. He finished 68th on the 2009 PGA Tour money list and went winless for the first time since 2001.

"Last year was, I don't know how else I can say it, was a big downer for me," said Singh, a former winner of the Masters (2000) and PGA Championship (1998 and 2004). "I had a lot of injuries that I had to deal with, and not playing well kind of made it even worse."

But a second surgery in December fixed his knee. A newfound commitment to exercise reinvigorated his spirits.

"I got a great trainer that's worked really hard in getting me in shape," said Singh, who in 2004 briefly wrested the world's No. 1 ranking away from Tiger Woods. "It's nice to be fit and ready to go."

Singh, a native of Fiji who lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, hasn't finished higher than 33rd in any of his four previous events this year, and was eliminated in the first round of the Accenture Match Play Championships two weeks ago, but he certainly got off to a nice start Thursday at PGA National.

Singh carded four birdies despite the blustery conditions, and hit 15 of 18 greens, the second-best success rate among the 144 golfers in the field. Singh's only blip was a bogey on 16, which he quickly erased with a birdie on 17.

Playing partner Nathan Green, the first-round co-leader at 65, was suitably impressed.

"You sort of don't realize he's 47 when you're playing with him," said Green, 34. "The shape he's in, he's pretty much equivalent to any of the guys out here in their 30s. He's looking after himself and reaping those rewards."

Singh, who has 34 career victories on the PGA Tour, owns the record for most wins over age 40 — he has 23. But he knows he can no longer rely on skill alone.

"I guess nowadays players are a little more into exercising and really taking care of what their physique should look like," he said. "You go in the gym, I was in there this morning at 5 — there were three pro guys in there with me."

The Open Championship safely secured its spot on the TV calendar of all golf fans, for the next few years anyway, with the best finish to a major probably since the last time it was held in 1999 also at Carnoustie. I had to listen via satellite radio, and then subsequently watched the highlights later, of one of the most riveting championships for a very long time.

Sergio Garcia played, deserved and should have won his first major at arguably the toughest of the Open championship venues. Playing in the final group with Stricker, who was struggling, Sergio righted the ship so to speak and with 6 holes to go, was playing near flawless golf. Other than Garcia's slight hiccup on holes 5 thru 8, it was a perfectly played and thought out game plan. Realize that on every hole, and with each hole measuring ridiculous lengths like 513 yard par 4's, danger lurks with each and every stroke.

Having played Carnoustie in ideal conditions and in not so ideal April weather conditions I can tell you that it is a stern test without any other factors or pressures such as trying to win your first ever Open and major. I was a little surprised at the number of irons that players were using on each of the final closing holes. It may have indeed been the ultimate undoing of Sergio having to hit a 245 yard iron shot to the last hole to win.

He did almost pull it off and having hit a 7 iron into that green and been nervous the whole way until it landed on grass, I can't imagine "blasting" a two or three iron into that scary little gap. Much has been made of Sergio's putting woes and the switching to the belly putter and "but for the grace of god" (Peter Alliss comment) his putt on the final hole which disappeared ever so briefly and stayed out, would have rightly crowned him Champion golfer for 2007. He did look good with it, but alas and somewhat coincidentally still no one has won a major championship using a long, belly or some other combination of that.

My thoughts and impressions are that it really helps those players that have any breakdown at all in either hand, wow heavy stuff. Having watched lots and I mean lots of players switch back and forth the roll off of a belly putter and the like, is significantly better than many that I see trying to control their nerves and do it conventionally. Now realize that the issue is psychological, and the fact that with tension and pressure it becomes very apparent and a need occurs for some kind of intervention. My only thought though, until someone breaks that streak, is that if you have a weakness in putting from a psychological point of view it may and probably will show up when you least expect it to or more importantly when you least want it to.

In Sergio's case and in his defence, the putt on the final hole was a good one but still did not go in. Harrington on the other hand, with all of his drama and nonsense down the last hole still had composure and a good enough stroke to be able to roll in a 6 footer to be good enough to get into the playoff. I believe now that Garcia will go from strength to strength, and indeed old Paddy will too. We may see a few more of these type of players compete more in the "American majors" and give Tiger and Phil a good run for their money.

Talking of others how about Andres Romero from Argentina? What was he thinking and doing heading up the 17th hole at Carnoustie with at the time a two shot lead? With an iron in hand he pushed his tee shot into "bundai" as the locals affectionately call it, and proceeded to hit a two iron off of a wall and out of bounds. Now I know that caddies are valuable to their players, but what were they thinking with that lie and with that shot facing them? Obviously, not very much.

With a wedge or a nine iron especially the way in which he was putting, chances are he could have gotten up and down to maintain his two stroke lead or even have a shot lead heading up the last. His drive on 18 was by far the longest of the leaders and his 8 iron into the green and obvious miss hit lead to a bogey and subsequent one shot loss. Talk about going brain dead for twenty minutes, and never will this young man have a better chance. For Sergio Garcia there will be many more chances and that putter, if he can believe in it fully, will secure his first of many major crowns.

Phil Mickelson is a very well-known professional golfer. His fun personality and family-man image has made him a favorite of many golf fans. Phil Mickelson was born in San Diego, California on June 16, 1970. Nicknamed "lefty" for his left-handed swing, Phil was a golfer from the very start. At the age three, he tried to run away when his parents wouldn't allow him to join his father on the course for a game of golf. At the age of four, he played his first round of golf and cried while approaching the 18th hole, knowing that the game would soon be over.

Graduating from University of San Diego High School (a catholic prep school) with a golf scholarship, Mickelson went on to attend Arizona State. While there, he quickly became the face of amateur golf, winning three NCAA championships and the U.S. Amateur title-the first left-handed golfer to do it. He also won his first PGA tournament in 1991 while still an amateur.

In 2004, Phil Mickelson finally won a major championship at the Masters. He won the Masters again in 2006.
